Code of Ethics, 1st January 2004

  1. COMPLIANCE WITH THE CODE OF ETHICS
    Each member, upon signing an application for membership or renewal of membership of the C.A.T. Inc., and being elected to the general membership of the C.A.T. Inc., shall in to agreeing to be bound by the Constitution, rules and regulations of the C.A.T Inc., be also bound by the C.A.T Inc. Code of Ethics relating to responsible cat ownership, including the keeping, welfare, breeding and disposing of cats by members to the effect of the terms and conditions set out under section 2 below.

  2. CODE OF ETHICS AND UNDERTAKING
    • I shall ensure that at all times all cats under my control are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised, and receive proper veterinary attention, if and when required.
    • I shall breed primarily for the purpose of improving the standard of the breed, and not specifically for the pet market or any other commercial purpose.
    • I shall not breed more kittens than I can reasonably place.
    • Excepting in exceptional circumstances, I shall not sell or transfer from care any kitten under ten (10) weeks of age, thus allowing for its first vaccination to be given.
    • I shall endeavour to ensure that all persons acquiring cats from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal, and that they have the time and facilities to perform their obligations
    • I shall provide to all purchasers of cats sold or placed by me, advice as required, of all dietary and immunisation requirements and written instructions relating to such requirements and responsible cat ownership.
    • I shall accept reasonable financial responsibility for the health status of kittens sold by me for a period of two (2) weeks after leaving my care. This is to cover the purchaser and the kitten for any infectious disease the kitten may have been incubating when in my care. My responsibility under this clause shall not extend to health matters wholly arising from the actions of the purchaser.
    • I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, nor mislead any person regarding the attributes of the cat.
    • I shall ensure when selling or transferring a cat to another person, whenever appropriate, documents as required by the C.A.T. Inc. (Rule 2.24) will be provided to the purchaser or transferee.
    • I will comply with all state/local government laws/regulations concerning keeping cats.
    • When a kitten is delivered by a third party then it is then it is the responsibility of the breeder to ensure that the third party conforms with all preceding points of this code.
    • While a cattery is in quarantine, no person either owning or residing at that cattery shall attend any cat related meeting without prior knowledge and permission of all persons likely to attend that meeting, or visit any other cattery or the home of any other exhibitor without the prior knowledge and permission of all the persons concerned as outlined in Rule 3.50.

  3. Any member failing to observe any provisions of the Code of Ethics may be dealt with under the rules of the C.A.T. Inc.
